Cuenca

Claudio Alberto Soriano Vitorino was born in 1954 in the Department of Cusco, Peru. He studied art at the Escuela Superior Diego Quispe Tito in Cusco and is a visual artist who specializes in oil on canvas, acrylic, and watercolor. He now lives and works in Cuenca, Ecuador.

Watercolor earned him national recognition in two countries. In Lima, the Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano awarded him First Prize at its XX National Watercolor Salon and Second Prize at its XVIII National Watercolor Salon. In Ecuador, he received Third Prize at the First National Watercolor Biennial in Ambato.

In a 2024 interview with the Chilean outlet La Región Hoy, Soriano said he does not work with sketches. The same interview traces the evolution of his style from an abstract pre-Columbian approach built on geometric lines to abstract expressionism. That year, his exhibition Sueño Andino, combining watercolor and oil works, opened at Sala Viña in Viña del Mar, Chile, where he also described a series in progress titled Ángeles caídos, with works as large as two and a half meters.

His exhibition record, as listed on his website, spans Ecuador, Chile, and the United States. In 2025 he showed at the Galería de la Alcaldía "Inés Domínguez" in Azogues and at the Instituto Chileno Norteamericano de Cultura in Valparaíso. In 2024 he took part in the AQ Arte Feria in Quito, and in 2023 he exhibited at the Antigua Escuela Central in Cuenca and the Museo del Portal in Ambato. Earlier venues include the Centro Cultural Benjamín Carrión in Quito (2018), the Museo Puertas de la Ciudad in Loja and the Alianza Francesa in Cuenca (2015), an exhibition in New Orleans, Louisiana (2016), the Museo Luis A. Noboa Naranjo in Guayaquil (2014), the Angst Gallery in Vancouver, Washington (2014), the Stonehenge Gallery in Portland, Oregon (2014), the Onda Gallery in Portland (2010), and ACME Arts Work in Chicago (2009).

His work is held in museum and gallery collections in Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Colombia. They include the Museo Municipal de Arte Moderno de Cuenca, the Museo del Banco Central del Ecuador in Loja, the Pinacoteca de la Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana in Cuenca, the Pontificia Universidad Católica in Quito, the Museo de Historia y Arte in Buenos Aires, and the Pinacoteca del Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano in Lima, along with private collections in Ecuador and other countries.

His career is the subject of the book El Universo Mágico de Claudio Alberto Soriano (2018, 89 pages), written by Eliécer Cárdenas.

His series draw on the religious heritage and spirituality of his native Cusco; on migrations, in which animals explore cities and fish dance among the leaves of trees; and on a fantasy in which angels visit Cuenca. In his exhibition La ciudad a travéz de la fantasía, he invites visitors into a dreamlike world where his brushes trace the boundary between reality and fantasy.
